Ecorestoration and Biodiversity Conservation

Direct or indirect human activities are responsible for the degradation, transformation and damage to the ecosystems on this planet with negative impacts on biological diversity and peoples’ livelihoods. There is now a growing realisation that we will not be able to conserve the earth’s biological diversity through the protection of hotspots and critical areas alone, we must have knowledge and tools to actively manage our outstanding biodiversity, to protect what remains of our natural vegetation while rehabilitating the degraded ecosystems that need ecorestoration which is an intentional activity that initiates or accelerates the recovery of an ecosystem with respect to its structure and functions. We require the better understanding of effective actions and mechanisms to conserve and restore biological diversity at various levels and scales New approaches for restoring species, degraded environments, and ecological processes and functions will improve the efficiency of restoration efforts; provide for ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation. The book “Ecorestoration and Biodiversity Conservation” offers guidelines on what needs to be done to better manage the biodiversity values, so that this wonderful gift of nature can be preserved to appreciate for its beauty, goods and services it has to offer. This volume contains 19 invited chapters by eminent experts, some of them are contributed by an impressive array of high profile botanists of our country. These topics cover a wide range of aspects including microbial, forest, wetland, wildlife and applied ecology and indicate a lot of efforts put by contributors into exploring the ways so as to cover the various topics and examine the various linkages, quantification and practical applications of ecological research in ecorestoration and biodiversity conservation. Thus, the book will be equally useful to the scientists, researchers, environmentalists, teachers, students, administrators and policy makers. The volume is dedicated to the sacred memory of Late Professor S.B. Saksena the eminent mycologist of the country.
