This book deals with the seven very important topics of Indian economy, (I) the changes in the size and composition of national income of India. (ii) the State domestic products of India, (iii) the per capita income and levels of living in India, with particular reference to international positions in PQLI, (iv) savings, capital formation and investment in India, (v) demographic dynamism in India, (vi )the nature and extent of employment and unemployment in India and (vii) the poverty scenario in India.
The theory of structural economic changes has been elaborated and the empirical vista has been examined with theoretical under-pinning. The per capita consumption levels and nutritional studies have been incorporated in the discussion about per capita income. The analysis of national income accounts is complete with the analysis of savings, capital formation and investment. The chapter on population is mini demography of India. The employment and unemployment issues have been discussed with reference to various sectors, activities, functions, rural and urban areas and the States. The chapter on poverty proves that ‘economics of poverty’ is not due to ‘poverty of economics.’ In fact failures on the front of controlling demographic explosion and not making employment a ‘leader’ of planning was responsible for the increasing incidence of poverty.
