This book is concerned with the process and politics of hazardous waste regulation in India. The impetus for our collection is the fact that little work has been done, and very little written about the political and institutional forces promoting policy formulation and implementation in this area. Although much has been written about the scope and nature of the hazardous waste problem this particular issue has been the subject of very little systematic research that extends beyond physical or economic assessments of the problem. Our primary rationale for the book stems from the realisation that governmental policy, more often than not, results from political considerations rather than prolonged assessments of the physical, technical, scientific or social parameters of an environmental problem.
