Human-induced climatic changes and greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere are already having observable impacts on ecosystems and species. A Climate-smart management plan for actively managing the viability of ecosystems as the climate changes has to be developed for conserving biodiversity and significant areas of habitat. The negative impacts of climate change on biodiversity have significant ecological and economic costs. Protecting and restoring ecosystems can be a cost-effective and affordable long-term means to help human communities defend against the effects of climate change. Efforts can be channelled towards the protection and restoration of ‘green infrastructure’ which require less maintenance and provide additional benefits to the communities in terms of food, raw materials, tourism and livelihoods.
There is a need to realize our dependence on Biodiversity and adapt accordingly. Ecoplanning helps in re-integrating our development in less damaging ways to the environment through plans, policies, and individual action. Understanding vulnerabilities of indigenous communities is crucial in order to prepare for, and mitigate change impacts. Local and regional governments can benefit in many ways by integrating biodiversity management into climate protection and adaptation strategies. There will be a greater need for more flexible biodiversity conservation strategies that take the interests of different social groups into account in biodiversity management.
