Seed Technology and Seed Pathology

The development of scientific seed technology and nursery techniques is essential for the establishment of quality seedlings/saplings, germplasm conservation and to enhance forest productivity. The research on germination of forestry seeds has received increasing attention in recent years, since many tropical countries embarked on a large scale afforestation and reforestation programme. From quality seed collection to germination, seed needs greater attention for raising successful plantation. Seed technological and pathological approaches can contribute greatly to afforestation programmes and to improve forest productivity. Success of any major plantation programme depends, to a large extent, on the quality production of planting stock and, hence, it is necessary to set out standard methods and the techniques of seed technology. There is a tremendous scope for increasing research on quality seed collection, seed pretreatment, seed storage and tree improvement for advancement of seed technology. The development of seed technology of rare, threatened species is of paramount importance for bio-restoration and productivity enhancement of degraded forests. The threatened species have specific ecological niches and amplitude of distribution, and need the research on their eco-silvicultural requirements. The significance of seed technology needs to be appreciated to overcome the problems of climate change and to enhance productivity of tree species in the face of extensive destruction of habitats, species extinction and genetic erosion. The priority areas covered in this present compilation are germplasm conservation, artificial seed production, physiology, pathology and bio-chemistry aspects for production of quality seedlings and enhancing the forest productivity. The book would be of vital use for researchers, foresters, industrialists, academicians and other user groups for improvement of forest productivity.
