Industrial solvents are used as component ingredients in formulated products or as processing aids in manufacturing. Annual U.S. solvents demand is about 12 billion pounds valued at about five billion dollars. Demand will grow modestly but the mix of solvents will continue to change dramatically under environmental and regulatory pressure designed to reduce emissions of ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances), VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants).
In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the use of renewable biomass for energy production. Anaerobic biotechnological approaches for production of liquid energy carriers (ethanol and a mixture of acetone, butanol and ethanol) from biomass can be employed to decrease environmental pollution and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The specific product formation is determined by substrates and microbial communities available as well as the operating conditions applied.
Attempts to offer fermentative production and applications of important solvents. Chapter-1 introduces the concept and range of fermentation processes and products developed by fermentation technology. “Principles of Anaerobic Fermentations” are discussed in chapter-2. Various aspects for production of “Industrial Ethanol” are elaborated in chapter-3. Saccharification of fermentation substrates is initial step for production of fermentative products, so it is reviewed in chapter-4. Ethanol production from Molasses (chapter-5), starchy materials (chapter-6), cellulosic materials (chapter-7) and using wastes from food-processing and dairy industry (chapter-8) are described in subsequent chapters of the book. Similarly, fermentative production of “Acetone-butanol” (chapter-9), “Acetone-ethanol” (chapter-10), “Glycerol” (chapter-11), 2,3-butanediol” (chapter-12) and “Isopropanol” (chapter-13) are described as important industrial solvents.
The contents of this book will be useful to the students of pharmaceutical sciences and technology, Food science and technology, Agricultural Microbiology, Dairy sciences and technology, Public health sciences, Biochemical Engineering and other fermentation-related commercial and vocational courses.
