Women constitute about 48 percent of nations’ population. About 42.30 crore workers are working in India. The share of women in total employment is about 29 percent (12.27 crores) compared to 71 percent of men. Out of 12.27 crores women workers in India, over 95 percent women are in ‘Informal (unorganised) Sector’ and only 5 percent (61 Lakhs) in organised (Formal) sector.
In rural areas, amongst rural women worker 87 percent are employed in agriculture – as labourers and cultivators. In urban areas, about 80 percent are employed in informal sector like–household industries, manufacturing, petty traders and services, domestic work, building construction. They are engaged in ‘Labour Intensive’ tasks. Informal women workers are usually ill–paid compared to their male counterparts. They are vulnerable because their work is insecure, irregular, low paid, menial and most casual in nature. They are in hazardous and arduous occupations without any advantage of social securities and other privileges. Majority of Informal women workers are unskilled.
Needless to note that women participation in economic activities reduces ‘population growth’ and ‘poverty’, enhances child survival and development, contributes to economic development. Despite of this, the greater productivity of female labour is not ‘adequately rewarded’. Women are ‘no less productive’ than their male counterpart in most of cases but their wage on average is low. In Informal sector, Gender equality and justice are still ‘distant dream’. The present book is an attempt to construct a comprehensive picture about the Informal women workers in India. The book is a collection of academic and research papers contributed by experts in the field belonging to reputed universities and centre of academic excellence in India.
