Deserts are regions of extremely sensitive and fragile ecosystems of the world. The unfriendly expanse of the Indian Desert is a part of the hostile Thar Desert. This book is based on an ecological study of this Great Indian Desert and the impact of the Indira Gandhi Canal on it.
For ages, this region is known for its excessive arid conditions. Yet it is the most densely populated among all the other deserts. As it holds promise for the growth of life, the Government has initiated various development projects. The Desert National Park (DNP) is one such enterprise.
The DNP is an ace project of Indian planning. It holds space for conservation and growth of all including the State animal-the Chinkara, the State bird-Gondavan, the State tree-Khejri, and the State flower-Rohira. It is an excellent centre for the study and research in desert ecology. It has provided shelter to a number of near-extinct species and has become a site for the preservation of world famous fossils. Moreover, the DNP has encouraged tourism in the State.
The Desert National Park is a multi-utility project. Perhaps it is the only National Park in the word where wildlife and traditional human habitats have existed for centuries. It has been called the “heartland of the desert”. The fact has inspired the present study, which is based on the regional ecosystem.
This elaborate study will prove invaluable to research scholars geographers, environmentalists, students and tourists.
