Trends and Portents in Banking

The stellar role of financial institutions in general and of banking sector in particular in promoting socio-economic developments is duly recognized universally. In India the significance of and expectations from this sector increased tremendously particularly after the nationalisation of major commercial banks in 1969. And undoubtedly, since then the banking institutions have tried to provide a big push both to the so called “transfer process” i.e.mobilisation of savings as well as their channelisation in desirable investments via the mechanism of finance, and social transformation through mass banking. There are, however, the starker facts of the matter also. While the quantum of deposit obilisation and credit outflows have remained below the potential and requirements respectively, the quality of leading has hardly satisfied the twin criteria of efficiency and equity. Paradoxically, the growth of literature on such an important area of banking has lagged behind its expansion and proliferation. An attempt has been made in the present edited volume to bridge this gap by combining a collection of theoretical and empirical studies so that practical suggestions may have theoretical underpinnings and the volume proves useful both heuristically for further researches and practically for action.
