Poetry is an expression through language and hence for a student reading the poets, a handsome knowledge of the poetic background is essential. Essential too is the knowledge of rhetoric and prosody. Both these subjects have been dealt with in this book Victorian Poets of the Nineteenth Century. On reading the Victorian poets such as – Lord Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold – students will be able to grow a deeper appreciation of Victorian poets. Influenced by revolutions in America and France the Victorian poets offered a radical development in poetry. The poetry of the Victorians was less constrained and more individualistic. Often the Victorians such as Tennyson and Blake gained their inspiration from nature rather than conventional religion. The poetry of William Blake is perhaps the most outstanding from this period; often he delved into mystical themes rarely touched upon by previous British Poets. And though some of the most imaginative and creative poetry was created centuries earlier. This book tries to describe some nineteenth century Victorian poets where their poetry reaches its peak.
