As we enjoy the benefits of industrial goods and services in life, we also generate toxic and hazardous products as byproducts. Production of the products that sustain our modern lifestyle and living habits such as food, energy , potable water, life-saving medicines, clothing, housing and transport, generate tremendous amount of toxic and hazardous wastes. Hazardous wastes and substances pose grave risks to human health at all times-from generation to storage and disposal, and it is a risk not only to the present generation but also to the future generations as it affects the ‘hereditary materials’. More alarming are the ‘cancer inducing’, ‘DNA changing’ and ‘endocrine disrupting’ chemicals in industrial wastes.
This book focuses on the alarming human and environmental problems created by industrial and hazardous wastes and also provides some suitable solutions. Industries are like a necessary evil. Both industry and the environment have to co-exist. The 3R philosophy of ‘waste reduction, reuse and recycling’ is the universally accepted solution for waste management. But these are all ‘end-of-pipe’ (EOP) solutions. The new approach is ‘waste prevention through cleaner production’ at the ‘beginning-of-pipe’ (BOP). Several industries are now embracing this philosophy, because ‘prevention pays’.
